Did you know?  The federal government deficit is now estimated to be $1.42 trillion for 2009 alone.  That is larger than all the debt for the first 200 years of the United States combined.
 
Did you know?   That in 1929 there were over 25,000 banks in the United States.  Of those banks, 10797 (approximately 42%) failed between 1929 and 1933.  In 2008 there were over 8,500 banks in the United States.  In 1975 the roughly 5,400 S&Ls made about half the nation's home mortgages.
 
Did you know?  An illegal alien that works 18 months in this country can go home and collect Social security.
 
Did you know?  American workers have paid $2 trillion dollars more into the Social Security Trust fund than has been paid out. Yet the Fund is empty, because Congress has spent every last dime on other things.
 
Did you know?  America has about 6% of the world's population and about 24% of the world's inmates.
 
Did you know?  We have troops in 130 nations and over 700 bases overseas. That in 2006 Congress appropriated $300 billion in foreign aid. That is more than 40 of our states budgets combined.
 
Did you know?  The 2008 budget is$2.77 trillion and the proposed 2009 budget was $3 trillion.  The actual 2009 budget ended up being $3.7 trillion.
 
Did you know?  An amendment was offered in 2007 (August 2) to stop paying welfare to illegal aliens.  It initially passed by a vote of 215 to 213.  The majority leader (Congressman Hoyer) reopened vote until  he could get someone to switch their vote to no, making the vote 214 to 214.  The amendment therefore failed.  So we are still paying welfare to illegal aliens.
 
Did you know?  The IRS estimated that individual and business taxpayers spent 6.65 billion hours complying with the tax laws in fiscal 2006.  That is the equivalent of 3.2 million employees working 40-hour weeks year-round without any vacation.
 
Did you know?  Congress had 9,000 earmarks in 2007.  One of those earmarks by the incumbent from CD 5 was for $450,000.00 for one of his campaign donors, the Beverly Hills, California based InTune Foundation Group.  In 2005, InTune got a previous earmark for nearly $500,000.00 to develop lesson plans on funk music.
 
Did you know?  On April 18, 2006 Nancy Pelosi said "Democrats have a plan to lower gas prices..."  And on April 24, 2006 she said, "Democrats have a commonsense plan to help bring down skyrocketing gas prices..."  Instead of lower gas prices, we are paying a more per gallon at the pump than when our current Congressional leaders took control of Congress in 2006.
 
Did you know?  A new oil refinery has not been built in the United States in more than 30 years?  
 
Did you know?  Currently, Congress is running a deficit of over $4 billion dollars per day.
 
Did you know?  Currently, Congress is running the biggest deficit in the history of the country. 
 
Did you know?  The projected interest expense on the national debt was $406 billion dollars for 2008.
 
Did you know?  That prior to 2007:
1) Consumer confidence stood at a 2 1/2 year high;
2) Regular gasoline sold for $2.19 a gallon;
3) The unemployment rate was 4.5%.
Near the end of 2008 we saw:
1) Consumer confidence plummet;
2) The cost of regular gasoline soar to over $3.50 a gallon;
3) Unemployment rise to 5%, (it is now double digits);
4) $2.3 trillion of American households equity value evaporate (stock and mutual fund losses);
5) Home equity drop by $1.2 trillion dollars;
6) 1% of American homes in foreclosure. 
 
Did you know?  Gasoline costs 45 cents a gallon in Saudi Arabia, 35 cents in Iran, and less than a quarter in Venezuela.
 
Did you know?  There is between 800 billion and 2 trillion barrels of oil that could be recovered in Utah, Colorado and Wyoming if Congress would lift the moratorium on exploration.  That is enough oil to meet America's energy needs for 100 years.  
 
Did you know?  Gas prices at the pump reflect, on average,  about 4% profit for the oil company, 15% tax and 58% cost of crude oil.  The other 23% goes to refining and distribution.
 
Did you know?  CO2 was measured to be 315 parts per million in 1958.  It is 385 parts per million today.  CO2 is an invisible, natural gas that all persons and animals exhale.  Trees and plants take in CO2.
 
Did you know?  Maryland has four high school assessments that students must pass to get a diploma.  The test all have a scoring range of 240 to 650.  The test and passing scores are: Algebra 412 (42%); Biology 400 (39%); English 396 (38%); Government 394 (37%).

Did you know?  Withholding taxes from people's paychecks began JUNE 9, 1943.  Congress passed it as an emergency measure to get money to fight Hitler.  The idea came from Beardsley Ruml, treasurer of Macy's and chairman of New York's Federal Reserve Bank.  It was called the "pay-as-you-go" tax.  But Americans weren't always so taxed.  In his 2nd Annual Message, 1802, Thomas Jefferson wrote: "To proceed as we have begun in substituting economy for taxation."  In his Message to Congress, May 27, 1830, Andrew Jackson said: "Through the favor of an overruling and indulgent Providence our country is blessed with general prosperity and our citizens exempted from the pressure of taxation, which other less favored portions of the human family are obliged to bear."
